After a now-customary period of rumors, leaks, and anecdotal evidence, Apple's new generation of MacBook Pro laptops has arrived. And though these new models may look the same as the ones they replace, the changes under the hood are some of the most far-reaching in the history of the MacBook Pro brand.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro moves from Intel's original Core i-series CPUs to the latest second-generation chips, formerly code-named Sandy Bridge. Not only that, you can forget about seeing an Intel Core i5 CPU in your 15-inch (or 17-inch) MacBook Pro--these use high-end quad-core Core i7 chips now. Our step-up $2,199 review unit had a 2.2GHz quad-core i7, with 4GB of RAM and a huge 750GB hard drive (at only 5,400rpm, however).

The biggest surprise is the 15-inch MacBook Pro's graphics processor. Instead of the Nvidia GeForce 330M graphics card previously found in these systems, the GPUs now come from Nvidia's longtime rival AMD. The base 15-inch model has an AMD Radeon HD 6490M, and our review unit had an even faster 6750M. With Intel's improved integrated graphics in the 13-inch models, that means that Nvidia has been completely ousted from the MacBook Pro line.

The iconic unibody aluminum construction remains, as does the large glass multitouch trackpad. Most of the ports and connections also remain the same, with one very notable new addition. Where the Mini DisplayPort connection used to be, now an identically sized port is marked with a lightning-bolt icon. That's for Thunderbolt, Intel's new high-speed powered-port technology for data transfer and displays. The Thunderbolt tech is envisioned as a sort of future unified successor to USB, FireWire, and DisplayPort, allowing peripherals to carry data and video at 10Gbps (in the video above, we may have had a slip of the tongue and said Mbps, but we meant Gbps).

For now, at least, that promise is hypothetical. We have very little idea of exactly when Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals will be available (although Apple says the first ones should show up in the spring of 2011), how much they'll cost, or if Apple will be adding the technology to future displays or iOS devices. For now, it's a wait-and-see gamble on a future technology.

The lowest-cost 15-inch MacBook Pro is still $1,799, following the usual Apple trajectory of keeping the price steady but adding faster, more powerful components. While we're still waiting for oft-requested extras such as HDMI, Blu-ray, and 3G, the speed and power of these new quad-core Core i7 CPUs is extremely impressive, and leaves even other recent MacBook Pros in the dust.

2.2GHz Intel Core i7 quad-coreAMD Radeon HD 6750M / Intel HD 3000System weight / Weight with AC adapter

By now, the shape and size of the MacBook Pro should be very familiar. Even more recent Apple designs, such as the second-generation MacBook Air, are basically just variations on it. The core building block remains the same: a solid block of aluminum, which is carved down into a shell with support struts. This unibody chassis has the benefit of being thin (for a 15-inch laptop), but strong and flex-free at the same time.

The touch philosophy that informs the iPad/iPhone line of devices can be said to have its roots in the large multitouch clickpad-style trackpad that's been a staple of the MacBook Pro for years. Of the multitouch gestures, our favorite is sweeping up or down with four fingers to show or hide all your active windows. Once you get used to that, going back to a regular touch pad is difficult. A few new gestures are apparently coming to the next version of OS X, but you won't see those until this summer.

Several Windows laptops have added larger clickpads over the past year or so, with similar multitouch gestures, but we can easily say that none can yet compete with the MacBook Pro's implementation.

The 1,440x900-pixel display is still a higher resolution than many 15-inch laptops (many of which are 1,366x768 pixels), and two screen upgrades are available: a 1,680x1,050-pixel-resolution version for an extra $100, or a 1,680x1,050-pixel-resolution "antiglare" version for $150. That's a lot more flexibility than the 13-inch MacBook Pro, which still doesn't have a glare-free or higher-resolution screen option (even though the current 13-inch MacBook Air has a stock 1,440x900-pixel resolution).

Mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt I/OStereo speakers, headphone/microphone jacksStereo speakers, headphone/microphone jacks2 USB 2.0, FireWire 800, SD card reader4 USB 2.0, SD card reader, eSATAEthernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, BluetoothEthernet, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, optional mobile broadband

The big story in the ports and connections category is the new port based on Intel's Thunderbolt high-speed I/O technology. If it looks a lot like the Mini DisplayPort connection on previous MacBook Pros, that's because it is the same, except for the tiny lightning bolt logo next to it. It still functions as a DisplayPort output, and, in fact, you'll be able to daisy-chain up to six Thunderbolt devices or displays to that single port.

While there aren't any Thunderbolt peripherals available yet, we did get to see a demo of a prototype RAID product when we met with Apple, and the performance passing multiple uncompressed HD video streams was impressive. Thunderbolt is technically capable of 10Gbps bidirectional transfer, and if Intel and Apple have their way, it may replace many other kinds of ports and connections in the future.

Also notable on the new MacBook Pro is a 720p Webcam, which works with the new Mac version of FaceTime, the same video-conferencing application found on the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch. With a solid Wi-Fi signal, jumping into full-screen mode was clear and mostly stutter-free. There's also an onscreen button for changing the video window from portrait mode to horizontal, and video calls can be made between MacBooks and iPhones as well. You can read more about FaceTime for Mac in this hands-on. It's also worth noting that the SD card slot is now SDXC-compatible, meaning it will work with higher-capacity SD cards.

But while Thunderbolt and FaceTime are interesting extras, the real muscle behind the new MacBook Pro is the quad-core Intel Core i7 CPU and AMD Radeon HD 6750M GPU. In our CNET Labs benchmark tests, it absolutely clobbers the competition, including last year's 15-inch MacBook Pro, which had a first-gen Intel Core i7, and other high-end midsize laptops, such as a Core i7 Alienware M15x.

To be sure, once more systems with these new Intel processors hit the streets, the competitive gap will close up significantly, but for now, this is the fastest laptop we've tested.

The switch from Nvidia to AMD in the graphics department came as a surprise. The AMD Radeon HD 6750M in our review unit is one of the better GPUs you can cram into a laptop right now. The less-expensive base-model 15-inch version of the MacBook Pro includes a still-good Radeon 6490M. As with the last generation of MacBook Pros, the discrete graphics automatically share the workload with the integrated Intel graphics as needed, saving battery life as you go.

Mac gaming, no matter what anyone says, is still a pretty fallow field, with many big games still available only for Windows systems. Fortunately, one of our most anticipated upcoming releases, Dragon Age II, will be Mac-compatible. Civilization V is another recent high-end game that will run on OS X. In our older Modern Warfare Mac gaming benchmark, we got 51.8 frames per second at a 1,440x900-pixel resolution with high quality settings, which was significantly better than the 34.5fps we got with the Nvidia GeForce 330M in last year's 15-inch MacBook Pro (but when we turned the graphics settings down to medium, the two GPUs were much more similar).

Apple MacBook Pro - Core i7 Sandy Bridge 15.4-inch - 2.2GHz

For once, our battery life score actually exceeded a manufacturer's estimate. Apple says the system should run for 7 hours on average, and in our video playback battery drain test, it ran for 7 hours and 5 minutes. That's about an hour longer than last year's model, even with all the new, powerful hardware inside.

Service and support from Apple has always been a bit of a mixed bag. Apple includes a one-year parts-and-labor warranty, but only 90 days of telephone support. Upgrading to a full three-year plan under AppleCare will cost an extra $349 ($100 more than for the 13-inch MacBook Pro) and is pretty much a must-buy, considering the proprietary nature of Apple products and their sealed bodies. Support is also accessible through a well-stocked online knowledge base, video tutorials, and e-mail with customer service, or through in-person visits to Apple's retail store Genius Bars, which, in our personal experience, have always been fairly efficient, frustration-free encounters.

Ken Dychtwald, CEO, recession, research, and consulting services to meet the needs of your organization, which focuses on the ageing ", which is developing is the digital divide," said. "New technologies are largely the seed lots 50-year-olds," Mr. Dychtwald said. "If you are a parent, you have the power to ask for your family, how all of the acts of courage."

The most commonly occur in the new technologies, or as part of the company's colleagues, through the system. "Learning in the workplace is the processing of the swimming pool and the sharing of new technologies," he added. "If you are at home, you do not have the environment around you."

But many of the technology even more valuable when people leave the Office. There are no products available to 18-year-olds and 80-year-olds, the information and entertainment on your PC and helps keep your family and friends.

Getting familiar with the certain products will help ensure that the technology, such as young people, making for young people.

The following are some of the easily picks:

You want to remain active? Buy a video game console. Forget about the first person shooters and the psychedelic mazes. Systems, such as the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 Accessories, that to get the players out of their chairs and move on the floor, whether virtual dance competition Training program, or a sports Simulator.

In addition, you can simply move around the benefits of the recent studies have shown an improvement in balance of some of the older people who use the Wii (about $ 180) and fitness programs such as Wii Sports (approximately $ 24). If your Tablet-PC: it seems that step too far, economic or technical reasons, consider using the e-book reader. Amazon's Kindle ($ 139) is the main operator. "Always on, never pay for its" wireless Internet connection means you can download books, most any seconds.

You can also subscribe to the Kindle editions of newspapers and magazines (and adjust the type size as well). In addition, the light is the light, which weighs only half a pound, and it can store up to 3 500 books.

You Want To Be PRODUCTIVE? Search for some applications. When you were at work, had some of the design. Some of the organizational chart was. If you want to keep these things in pension, is a software that can help you. Evernote is one application. It bills itself as a personal digital assistant, but it is a matter of fact, the world's largest cab file.

Evernote, you can copy and paste almost anything you find on the network memory books searchable on. "" Locate the picture, such as online? Copy and paste it into Evernote. Highlight the part of the e-mail message and save it to Evernote. Post a link to your friend who sent you the Evernote account.

Almost any device with an Internet connection can easily (and for some devices even store information about the offline, thanks to things like Evernote iPhone app). There is a free version of Evernote, and version of the $ 45 premium annual fee, which is not advertising, and some of the extended properties.

The second is a good plan to repurchase Nuance Dragon Dictation program. $ 100) for Windows computers (and Macs ($ 200) for the strength of the industry, employing the Dragon speech recognition technology, you can say accurately transcribed. You can speak naturally to a spoken punctuation and dictate an e-mail message.

The application also performs the voice commands to your computer, so you say "search the Stieg Larsson Amazon" to automatically redirect the browser to Amazon.com and search for these words. You want to see who does what? Get a digital photo frame. Digital photo frames is not new, but the growth of the wireless connection to provide some valuable years old technology with new features. A good example can be found in the latest advances in n Pandigital photo mail digital photo frame, $ 180.

At first glance it resembles many other digital picture frames — a simple dark rectangle surrounding eight-inch screen. And other digital frames, as in this template can display pictures on the camera memory card. But what sets this framework apart is its ability to receive new photos wirelessly, with friends and family.

The photo in the e-mail-on the Amazon Kindle, such as: is always on, no costs for wireless connection to the AT&T n wireless network. The frame also has its own e-mail address. This means that anyone, which is the address sends images to the frame in which they are displayed as soon as (note the screen indicates when new photos are in the Inbox).

If the parents cannot be on the beach, the grandchildren of the e-mail the photos, they take them and they will appear in the frame at home. And unlike other picture frames, which are similar, but require a Wi-Fi network, to get a photo in the e-mail box set up is almost at all.

These products and services are not of the everyday life of a radical design data, but they make measurable improvements to other users to be connected to the more efficient and information. And since these objectives are not age-restricted products, nor would that help you to achieve these objectives.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro is the most affordable of Apple's high-end laptops. With the admittedly supercharged 15-inch version starting at a princely $1,799, the 13-inch model's starting price of $1,199 is the one many consumers will likely consider first. Its size is also ideal, and in fact, we've long considered 13 inches to be the sweet spot in laptops for usability and portability. The question is: does the smaller Pro deliver the processing punch that last year's lacked?

In short, unequivocally yes. This year's 13-inch Pro gets a cutting-edge processor upgrade that many were waiting for--including us. That upgrade comes in the form of next-generation Intel Core i-series CPUs. The 2011 MacBook Pros are the first laptops we've reviewed at CNET with these processors; the entry-level 13-inch model features a second-generation 2.3GHz Core i5 processor, and the $1,499 configuration has a 2.7GHz dual-core Core i7.

However, despite the processor improvements, the use of Intel's HD Graphics 3000 integrated graphics is a step backward from the integrated Nvidia graphics found in the 2010 13-inch Pro. It's not a huge backslide, though, and for many it's a survivable loss. Plus, it does come with the much talked about high-speed data/video port, Thunderbolt.

Thunderbolt is envisioned as a sort of future unified successor to USB, FireWire, and DisplayPort, allowing peripherals to carry data and video at 10Gbps. We don't know when Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals will be available (although Apple says the first ones should show up in the spring of 2011), how much they'll cost, or if Apple will be adding the technology to future displays or iOS devices. For now, it's a wait-and-see gamble on a future technology, but at least the port is backward-compatible with Mini-DisplayPort and can support HDMI out with the purchase of a cable. The 13-inch MacBook Pro also keeps its FireWire 800 port, so Thunderbolt is more of an added feature than a risk Apple's making you buy into.

In the end, the 2011 13-inch Pro is a big step up in processing performance for the same price as its predecessor. To put it in perspective, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is about as powerful CPU-wise as last year's $2,199 15-inch Core i7 model. And while its integrated Intel graphics are a bit less capable than the previous model's Nvidia 320M GPU, the payoff comes with another big leap in battery life.

Lastly, if you're on the fence between the $1,499 13-inch and the $1,799 15-inch Pros, that $300 buys you a lot more computer. On the other hand, we'd argue that most people won't see or don't need the extra performance and it is a larger, heavier laptop.

Price as reviewed / starting price2.7 GHz Intel Core i7 (dual-core)System weight / Weight with AC adapter

There's nothing different design-wise about the new MacBook Pro. Walk up to the 2011 version and you'd have no idea that you were looking at a "new" Mac. The iconic design and unibody construction has remained intact, even identical, to last year's 2010 model, even down to the port layout. Ports line the left side, and the side-connecting MagSafe charging cable plugs toward the rear, staying out of the way. The slot-loading drive lines the right side. A wide expanse of aluminum and Apple's simple but excellently constructed keyboard feel like tech minimalism in a world of overwrought and overdesigned laptops, and the large multitouch clickpad is still--even nearly three years later--one of the largest we've seen. Construction quality is, as always, rock-solid: compared with other flexy laptops, the seamless metal body of the Pro feels like modern art.

That being said, we wouldn't mind some design improvements in the future, especially when it comes to thickness and weight. The 13-inch Pro is compact and thin, but compared to wafer-thin Apple products like the iPad and MacBook Air, it ends up feeling heavier. Then again, if thickness matters that much, you can always buy an Air.

A backlit keyboard still comes standard, even on the entry-level $1,199 MacBook Pro. It's useful for typing in low-light conditions, and the ambient light sensors control screen brightness and keyboard lighting in perfect balance. The ergonomics work excellently, and the MacBook Pro also has some of the largest, deepest palm-rest zones in a 13-incher.

Edge-to-edge glass still frames the Pro's 13.3-inch screen, and, yes, there still isn't a matte screen option--although on the larger 15-inch line, antiglare is offered. The display has excellent brightness, color, and contrast, and the screen's viewing angles are generous, but the 1,280x800 native pixel resolution is identical to the 2010 model's. Oddly, the MacBook Pro might be the last laptop that hasn't switched to a 16:9 1,366x768-pixel display. Even more oddly, the 13-inch MacBook Air actually has a higher resolution than the current 13-inch Pros, at 1,400x900 pixels. We're surprised that there wasn't a resolution upgrade in the higher-end $1,499 configuration.

Speaker volume is adequate, and both music and movies sound good on the integrated stereo speakers. The MacBook Pro doesn't have audio that reaches out and grabs you, unless you're wearing headphones; then again, on a 13-incher this slim, it does better than equivalent competition.

A new HD Webcam offers 720p wide-screen Web chats via the new FaceTime app, which comes preinstalled. FaceTime, which has been available as a beta release for a while, allows calls to both Mac users and iPhone 4 owners. iPhone 4 calls come in at a fuzzier resolution, but Mac-to-Mac calls looked relatively crisp over Wi-Fi. Swapping between portrait and landscape mode can be triggered with a single button-click.

Thunderbolt (Mini-DisplayPort)Stereo speakers, headphone/microphone combo jackStereo speakers, headphone/microphone jacks2 USB 2.0, FireWire 800, SDXC card reader, ThunderboltEthernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, BluetoothEthernet, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, optional mobile broadband

While most ports on the 13-inch MacBook Pro remain carbon-copy identical to those on last year's model, there are a few notable additions. The SD card slot now accepts SDXC cards. More importantly, the Mini-DisplayPort has subtly been transformed into the aforementioned Thunderbolt port. The Intel-developed data and audio/video port has extremely fast throughput at a maximum of 10Gbps, and compatible hard drives will be able to send files with blazing speeds. The tiny Thunderbolt port is powered, and will be able to daisy chain up to six connected devices, be they hard drives or even monitors. It's backward-compatible with old Mini DisplayPort monitors or cables, and like with last year's Pros, it can output audio and video over HDMI with a Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter.

Thunderbolt may be a rival to USB 3.0, but devices that can use the port won't even be available until spring. Most people will simply use the USB 2.0 and FireWire 800 ports on the 2011 MacBook Pro and be completely satisfied. Still, it's comforting to know that future port support is there. Is it necessary right now? No. In two years, however, it could be indispensable. Consider it future tech on your MacBook Pro--a perk, rather than a necessity.

Apple's laptops have always had limited upgrade and configuration options; the new Pros are no different. The 13-inch MacBook Pro comes in $1,199 and $1,499 configurations, with 2.3GHz Core i5 and 2.7GHz Core i7 dual-core CPUs, respectively. Our high-end $1,499 Pro comes with a 500GB hard drive and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. RAM can be expanded up to 8GB for an extra $200; the hard drive can be expanded up to a 5,400rpm 750GB drive for $100 or a solid-state drive at 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB. Those aren't cheap: the 128GB upgrade costs $200, whereas the 512GB costs a whopping $1,200.

That's it as far as configurations go. The 1,280x800-pixel glossy screen can't be upgraded, unlike on the 15-inch Pro. There's no option to add discrete graphics, either. It's an odd disconnect: even the 13-inch MacBook Air has a higher-resolution screen, and the lack of higher-end graphics feels cheap for such an expensive laptop.

The new second-generation Sandy Bridge Intel Core i7 CPU is a huge improvement on last year's 13-inch Pro. Benchmark tests show that this model is nearly twice as fast in multitasking and the iTunes test. Start-up boot time is also zippy, although nowhere near as fast as on the MacBook Air. This is the processor upgrade we were hoping for last year, and then some. Though you should obviously keep in mind that the 15-inch Pro is even faster, for the price and the size, it's hard to beat what the 13-inch offers. Until other next-gen Intel Core i-series laptops arrive, aside from the new 15-inch quad-core MacBook Pro, this is the second-fastest Apple laptop we've ever reviewed. Though the 15-inch 2011 MacBook Pro has an edge in multitasking, the 13-inch Pro more than held its own at single-task benchmarks--in fact, it was nearly the equal of its more expensive sibling.

Hide Review Next page

If there's one compromise on this year's 13-inch MacBook Pro, it's in the graphics. Instead of the Nvidia GeForce 320M graphics in last year's Pro, this year's models use integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000, part of the second-generation Core i-series' improvements. They're better than what we're used to from integrated graphics, but they're not ideal for hard-core gaming. We played Call of Duty 4 and got a reasonable 33.1fps at native resolution and anti-aliasing turned off, but only 18.2fps with 4x anti-aliasing turned on. Last year's MacBook Pro, with the same settings, achieved 36.3fps and 32.2fps, respectively.

However, for a normal, everyday user, the Intel integrated graphics are a success. They're effectively invisible; they "just work," to use Apple's words, ably running media and most casual 3D gaming. For those who want to seriously render or play upscale games, the 15-inch Pro's ATI Radeon graphics offer a major step up. Honestly, the Mac landscape is devoid of many big games, and the 13-inch Pro can at least play most of what's out there (Bejeweled 3, for instance, ran silky smooth).

For the second year in a row, the 13-inch MacBook Pro has made another leap in battery life. Matching the promises made by Apple, the 13-inch Pro's integrated battery lasted 6 hours and 58 minutes using our video playback battery drain test. That's far and away the best battery life on any laptop--Netbooks included--and is so good that you'll probably be able to carry your MacBook Pro for the day and leave your charger behind, if you're so bold. It's also an hour better than last year's 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Service and support from Apple has always been a bit of a mixed bag. Apple includes a one-year parts-and-labor warranty, but only 90 days of telephone support. Upgrading to a full three-year plan under AppleCare will cost an extra $249, and is pretty much a must-buy, considering the proprietary nature of Apple products and their sealed bodies. Support is also accessible through a well-stocked online knowledge base, video tutorials, and e-mail with customer service, or through in-person visits to Apple's retail store Genius Bars, which, in our personal experience, have always been fairly efficient, frustration-free encounters.

As fate would have it, an Intel chipset glitch delayed shipments of almost every laptop manufacturer, save one. Apple, which has typically been last in transitioning to new technology, is now among the first to launch laptops with Sandy Bridge (known officially as second-generation Core CPUs)—and arriving first has its privileges. The Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) ($2,199 direct) is the fastest laptop on our bench, thanks to a component overhaul that involves the first ever quad-core processor on a Mac laptop and a rekindled romance with AMD graphics. And then there's Thunderbolt, a new connection technology that has mounds of potential, but I'll contain my excitement until compatible peripherals ship. This, and a new Facetime HD Webcam, places the MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) at the peak of technology's Mount Olympus and earns it an Editor's Choice in the desktop replacement laptop category.

Thunderbolt Icon Is the only Design Change
Design-wise, don't expect a thinner or lighter laptop. The only change to the design is the addition of a Thunderbolt icon next to mini-Displayport. The MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) keeps its wondrous shape and form, since all of the changes are from within. At the moment, I don't see a need to alter its exterior. It's still the thinnest, most streamlined laptop in its class, made so by carving the center out of a thin slab of aluminum. It's at least a quarter of an inch thinner and about a pound lighter, at 5.5 pounds, than the Dell XPS 15 ($1,115 direct, 4.5 stars) (6.3 lbs) and Asus N53JF-XE1 ($1,015 street, 4 stars) (6.3 lbs).

The MacBook Pro15-inch (Thunderbolt) has several screen options, all of which require that you pay a significant premium, although I can't think of many consumer laptops that have an anti-glare screen (a $150 option). There are laptops that can scale to higher resolutions, though. The XPS 15 and the N53JF-XE1 either ship or have an option for a 1080p display (1,920-by-1,080); the Macbook Pro 15-inch is available with a 1,440-by-900 or 1,680-by-1,050 display ($100). Still, having screen options is a luxury that few others are willing to offer. The HP Pavilion dv7-4283cl, for instance, is only available with a glossy screen and 1,600-by-900 resolution.

The chiclet-style keyboard carries on the Macbook Pro tradition of black keys that matches the black of the screen's bezel. Backlights, which are found between the keys and aluminum foundation, are absolutely invaluable in low-lit situations. You can also find a backlit keyboard in the XPS 15. The signature Apple clickpad dwarfs all others in terms of size and responsiveness. No other touchpad can recognize two- to four-finger gestures as accurately and fluidly as Apple's, and the reason for this is two-fold: First, it's made of glass, which doesn't wear out over time. Others use acrylic or some lesser material in their touchpad construction. Second, the coding drivers and software for the touchpad are created in-house (instead of through some third-party developer) so that each click, swipe, or pinch works to perfection.

What is Thunderbolt?
The last time Apple led the way with a new connection technology was when it initiated the FireWire standard. Thunderbolt, an I/O technology from Intel (codenamed Light Peak), operates under a similar principle in that it boosts transfer rates to unprecedented levels. The technology lives inside the mini-Displayport, so structurally the port looks exactly like the one in the previous MacBook Pro iterations. But when it's connected to a Thunderbolt-equipped peripheral, transfer rates can hit a theoretical 10Gbps. That's roughly 21 times the speed of USB 2.0 and FireWire 400, 12 times that of Firewire 800, and twice that of USB 3.0.

The Thunderbolt port, as Apple explains it, is essentially taking PCI Express—the channel that every port and slot goes through—out of the box. It's like finding the shortcut that gets you directly onto the five-lane highway. Originally, Intel designed Thunderbolt to work over an optical cable, but because it has yet to figure out how to power external peripherals through this method, copper is used instead. You'll need a new cable that runs from the Thunderbolt/mini-Displayport to the external device. Yes, it can still output to an external display—or connect to any device for that matter. As proof, Apple demonstrated a RAID server (made by Promise Technologies) attached to the laptop, which was then attached to an Apple Cinema Display, in a daisy chain configuration. Thunderbolt is bi-directional, meaning it can have two streams going at the same time—up to 10Gbps for each stream. In practice, for instance, you can simultaneously stream four uncompressed 1080p video clips from the RAID server to the laptop (first stream) and then display out to the Cinema Display at the same time (second stream) without lag or distortion. You can barely stream one uncompressed 1080p clip through FireWire, let alone four. During Apple's demonstration, transfer speeds were peaking at 5Gbps—the realistic speed of Thunderbolt, judging by the throughput meter Apple had in place.

You can also think of Thunderbolt as a universal port. If a company were to create a Thunderbolt hub or adapter, it can work with all sorts of connection technologies, including FireWire, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, eSATA, and Gigabit Ethernet. Remember, all of these technologies go through PCI Express at some point. Before you get too excited, though, Thunderbolt peripherals won't ship for months (the ones that were on display were prototypes), and Apple is rumored to have an exclusive on this technology until 2012. So doubts about its adoption rate is completely understandable. Update: Intel pointed out that there is no exclusivity on Thunderbolt, OEMs are free to implement it when they think the time is right.)

Facetime HD and Usual Suspects of Features
With the new HD Webcam sensor, video feeds no longer look grainy or grotesquely stretched when filling the entire screen. The streams are broadcast at a resolution of 1,280-by-720 (720p), which is about 3 times the resolution of the Webcam in previous MacBook Pro models. Video chatting with the Facetime app, over a Wi-Fi connection, was free of distortions. The MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) isn't the only laptop with an HD Webcam, though. You can find one in the Dell XPS 15, which has a Skype-certified HD Webcam. Lenovo, Sony, and HP have also rolled out laptops with 720p-capable HD Webcams.

Every other port and slot remains untouched from the previous iteration. It has two USB ports, FireWire 800, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and SDXC media card slot. The dual-layer DVD burner will seem generic compared with the Blu-Ray drives found in the Dell XPS 15 and HP Pavilion dv7-4283cl ($999.99 list, 4 stars). And don't expect to see a Blu-ray drive in a Mac laptop anytime soon, as this is a road Apple so far refuses to take. This configuration ships with a 750GB hard drive that spins at 5400rpm; the Dell XPS 15 and HP dv7-4283cl come with faster 7200rpm drives. The MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) offers SSD drives as well, in 128GB ($100), 256GB ($500), and 512GB ($1,100) capacities.

Massive Component Overhaul
Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) With Intel's second-generation Core architecture, this isn't a mere brain transplant where you swap out one processor for another—it's a multi-organ makeover. For the first time in MacBook Pro history, the MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) is equipped with a quad-core processor—a 2.2GHz, Intel Core i7-2720QM (past models had dual-core processors). The two extra cores play a vital role in multithreaded tasks, such as those found in professional video and photo editing packages (think Final Cut Pro and Adobe Products). A revamped architecture also means faster memory speeds (up to 1333MHz), although capacities are still 4GB to start, 8GB ($200) maximum.

On our PCMark Vantage test—a gauge of overall performance—the MacBook Pro 15-inch scored 8,315 (under Windows 7 Home Premium via Bootcamp), outpacing the Asus N53SV-A1 (7,257), which has a second-generation 2GHz Intel Core i7 2630QM CPU and 4GB of memory (stay tuned for our review).. The MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) finished Handbrake, a single-threaded video transcoding test, in 1 minute 53 seconds, well ahead of the Asus N53SV-A1 (2:06). It crushed the previous Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Core i5), particularly in Cinebench 11.5 (5.07) and Handbrake (1:53) tests where the gains were doubled. It wouldn't even be fair to compare the MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) to the Dell XPS 15, Asus N53JF-XE1, and HP dv7-4283cl, since the other three are running previous-generation Intel parts. Suffice it to say, it was a massacre, but I suppose being first with new technologies on our labs bench has its advantages.

One of the more unexpected changes lies in the graphics. Apple has long been an Nvidia proponent on the laptop side, although it has used ATI (now AMD) graphics chips in the past. But the company believes that the AMD Radeon 6750M is a better 3D chip, and the performance numbers bear that out. This is the first time a MacBook Pro has broken the 10,000 point mark in 3DMark06 (it scored 10,878), edging the Asus N53SV-A1 (10,073) and its Nvidia GeForce GT 540M GPU. The MacBook Pro15-inch (Thunderbolt) blew past the Dell XPS 15 (8,174) and HP dv7-4283cl (4,723) in the same test, although the Dell XPS 15 is being updated with a new Nvidia chip as we speak. At high-quality settings, popular game titles like Crysis (18.8 frames per second) and Lost Planet 2 (30.8 fps) were absolutely playable, as I found out by running them in Windows 7, via Bootcamp.

Apple also found a way to link its Automatic Graphics Switching (AGS) technology with the AMD graphics chip, whereas Windows-based laptops are still performing the switch manually through software. The switch, like the previous iteration, is done automatically by recognizing which apps or tasks require a heavy-duty graphics chip. So plugging in an external display, running 3D games, or transcoding an HD video defaults to the AMD Radeon 6750M, while basic tasks (e-mail, Web browsing, etc) defaults to the integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics. Apple will also let you to force the laptop to run on the AMD graphics, done through system preferences.

Although the size of the battery didn't change and the internals aren't any more energy efficient than the previous platform, the MacBook 15-inch (Thunderbolt) improved its battery score on MobileMark 2007 (run in Windows via Bootcamp) to 4 hours 40 minutes (from 3 hours, 21 minutes in the previous version). It goes without saying that power management and battery optimizations are better tuned in the Mac OS 10 environment than in Windows7, which is why I also looped a MP4 movie file in OS 10 until the battery died. The 15-inch lasted 6 hours 43 minutes in this test. Whether it's in Windows 7 or Mac OS 10, it outlasted the Dell XPS 15 (3:48 on MobileMark 2007) and Asus N53JF-XE1 (3:15).

Final Thoughts
Now, I realize that it's still early in the game, as scores of laptops will eventually arrive on my bench with Intel's second-generation chips and with graphics chips as powerful as the ones found in Apple's new laptops. As it stands, however, the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) is the fastest and fastest shipping laptop to date (you can stroll into Apple store and buy one as we speak), and it's all thanks to an Intel chipset glitch that prevented every other manufacturer from shipping their new laptops on time. Apple has assured me that this glitch will not affect any of the MacBook Pros, since they're all using new and unaffected chipsets from Intel.

As for the new Intel architecture, this happens once every year, if not longer, and Apple made the most of it. The speeds clocked from our full range of performance tests were mind-blowingly fast, as were the graphics frame rates that came from a renewed partnership with AMD. Although Thunderbolt is still very early in its third-party support stages, it's a hot new technology that Apple wrestled away from everyone else. Add the Facetime HD Webcam and the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) is a technological tour de force.

Heejung Chung walked classifier regularly operates the seventh in the Palo Alto Apple store on Wednesday evening with a violin case, his back to the hard, but I spent playing strapped iPad and his shoulder for the next hour.

Heejung was invited to participate in a seminar hosted by nine other students, Apple and presented by Ge Wang Smule, whose company created iPad app "Magic violin." Would you like to stay at the Community School of music and Mountain View Arts students sat in hand, each iPad store for stools on the back of the island around the circular, Wang began with a lesson.

"Not in a good position," said Wang, Stanford Associate Professor of computer science, music, and who founded the Smule in 2008 for a period of at least a two-nautical-mile zone off University Avenue Apple store. "Ruoto." Their chins touched the screen graphic Bubbles streamed to the iPad, it was turned over the iPad and the violin.

"We don't have a bow. What we have here is a curious circular bow-we call it a circle, "Wang said thingamabob. "Now places its index finger tip string." After the tutorial, raised his hands, such as Wang conductor:

"One, two, three-out-of-the-TAP!", he said, as the Magic Flute "and" Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star ' music appeared on the screen.

As they are printed and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, strings, voices, digital, speakers, they sounded almost circus Orchestra warming up. Or, as in the case of Wang said, "we are already sound like we are in a horror movie. Pretty good! " His mark, he gave them the

downbeat. "Let ' s swell, crescendo," he said, the son of places closer to home, one of his left thumb in the middle of the violin.

"Play, thine ear was not merely," he said. "It is only about playing, it is about a song-and everyone else with you're listening to." Already Advanced music students, and then, he presented a universal "cut off" the character that stopped the song fist to the dealer.

Customers had already collected the crowd spektaakkelin in this respect, and a few Apple broke into applause.

"It is intended to replace the tools, but are not limited to, augment," Wang said. "We do not try to imitate the instruments, but only to examine the new music experience." Wang, 33, has already developed for other popular music apps for the iPhone and iPad, including the Magic Flute (blowing into the microphone and, if the user finds that the play screen taps) and Glee Karaoke, where he developed the Fox digital media together.

Parents watched the AWE extensions.

Petra Clark, strings, and the teacher, whose two sons joined the workshop Mountain View school "is interesting," said. "My boys are not string players. This software, which is essentially a string instrument of the experiment gives them a window becomes the new instrument, without any obstacle to learning a new instrument, in fact. "

Learning as an instrument that can "take a long time before you actually play something that sounds good." His two for boys, who plays the trumpet, and drums, "they get to taste it to sit with me, telling them of the cello wihout."

Evy Schiffman, Marketing Manager, community, school, said he was fond of the children to see, so engaged.

"Mutually regardless of whether you can make them with State-of-the-hook, music studies with technology to connect to is," Callahan "and they teach each other. That is dynamic, I'm watching--and they are becoming an orchestra. "

Kevin Murray, 10, said he plays the drums and sax and "do not play anything, such as the violin. It is cool. It is a great idea. "

Heejung Chung, who is the youngest member of the Stanford 12 Symphony valued technology.

"It is as close as possible to get the acoustic violin," he said. "You can hear your mistakes."

And walk in the Park, such as the iPad users can win points for something their performances--trumpet student Ryan Araghi, enjoy.

"Deserve a medal!" he called.

He had one more question: in the case of Wang "Are never going to make the guys trumpet?"

"Maybe," Wang said.

And Apple customers continued to fill the container, to complete his disciples of Wang faces grand finale Silent Night: "one, two, three-out-of-the-TAP!".

GE has begun with the bright idea. But the current influence extends beyond many light bulbs and household appliances. GE is one of the world's largest technology companies, designate a limited number of dedicated to aviation, clean energy, financial services, media and healthcare technology business units. The company, to develop and construct imagines a techniques that transform the way we live, it is towards the iPhone and iPad apps, one of the href of the House to create new business opportunities for power.

"The future is what we are," says Linda Boff, GE's global Director of marketing communications. "We always thought about what's next. How technology can make life better and help our customers more effectively? iPad and iPhone are wonderful ways to inspire us and help us GE can. "

When the iPhone was released, GE recognizes its employees as quickly as possible, the mobile data Access, fast to use, easy-to-use interface to enable business value.

"We were early adopters mobile technology," says Senior Vice President, digital, Dayan Anandappa and cooperation. "Not just for email, but the timing, productivity and get the content from anywhere. Before the iPhone, the travel and meetings is always a laptop computer. Now you are no longer attached to the location that you specify — and thou hast not yet productive. "

The introduction of the IPad productivity opportunities for GE created mobile:. "the iPad gives me access to e-mail, contacts, my articles and PowerPoint presentations," says Chief Information Officer Vic Bhagat. "I can even get GE-specific data and applications. It has made things much easier and much more mobile. "

The best in my new iPhone Apps

So you've got a new iPhone to Verizon's network. Mazel tov. For those new to the iPhone ecosystem, it's a good idea to check out our many guides available on the new smartphone from different Apps.

We have the dueling iPhone app choices of technology columnist David Pogue and the App Smart columnist Bob Tedeschi's favorite apps, a former tech reporter and a longtime Apple Watcher, John Markoff picks and media columnist David Carr choices.

Check back often, as the Apps index is constantly updated coverage of all corners of the nytimes.com apps.

For example, Mr. Tedeschi's rules of procedure:

SOUNDHOUND (free of charge and the $ 5), you've probably heard of Shazam, an application that identifies songs. SoundHound is faster and it offers a wider range of ancillary features. Tune in to the phone and it will find the hum the song, find lyrics and perform the song performance on YouTube videos. $5 Version allows you to identify an unlimited number of songs. Free version users are entitled to five tags per month.

HIPSTAMATIC ($ 2) Scores for astrophotography, the labels are in the App store. Many are great, but is not responsible for Hipstamatic: a blend of simplicity, by chance, and art. In the heart of our programs is to saturate the filter that unpredictably, blur, or images of, inter alia, discolor. The results are always surprising and often stunning. Add $ 1 to the effects of the lenses and film packaging.

EVERNOTE (free), the company advertised this as a personal digital assistant, and it is apt. Evernote is a Note on the road, which synchronizes your desktop and the browser software (also free). IPhone allows you to copy a picture, take a photo, record, voice memo, or jot a note, and it appears on your computer (and vice versa). It also recognizes the limits of the text. The free version is stored in a fair amount of information, but the $ 45 a year, and within the limits of the data in the Hyphenate at sweat.

ANGRY birds ($ 1) in the case of A runaway favorite among the iPhone crowd, the application to test your ability to protect the barricades that are broken down into the Green pigs. The weapon: catapult launched flightless birds. No wonder they are angry. The game is easy to learn, yet challenging play with witty touches throughout. You can try to restrict the free version, but if you do, good luck in order to be paid by the cab on the version, which is in excess of 800 possible scenes.

The best iPad Apps for the Media

Historical media Promote radio, television, print and Web to iPad inside frame — all just content, backlighted and calls, waiting for a finger swipe.txt. Long form narrative and News found reliable Wing man iPad.

On the desktop, we have links, check the result of the Ribbon, and then some more, to find the information about well drilling, but never really read much of anything.

Relative to the screen size and heft, and encourages the iPad allows the user to stop typing so much, lean back and actually read something. And in the process, it renews the reading Romance: people want to touch on what they learn about the partnerships and the iPad allows that one reading something longer than Twitter post or news alert.

Some of my favorites:

BBC NEWS (free): intelligently organized grid With column to the right and left, the BBC, the app allows you to quick skims of interest with the port facility and one. It is quite buggy days of events to the window, all around the world. News ticker at the top to keep the reader's minutes up and has the option to listen to BBC Radio live as well.

the NEW YORK POST (free): Suppose someone and we are naming names here is a little taste of the tabloid side of the street. But it may seem less than green to buy only the page six of the situation and see what kind of war-New York Post dead version part is trying to gin up sports. New York Post, the app is there for you. A good landscape and air navigation services, with a dropdown bar that searches you want to go to. Miss "tree," the screaming of the front cover? Is not a concern. IPad, you can make your own tabloid covers, and send it to a friend. Completely useless, but the economic utility.

INSTAPAPER (free and $ 5): you're doing a ton of Web research at your desk, but don't have time to digest. Instapaper allows you to mark the document, and then back at a later date, say, Chair, when the House has quieted as the night, through all of these documents in a clear, clean, easily readable format leaned.

$ 4.99 you can Fork over the Instapaper iPad paid version, it may be the best you will ever spend a fin, you can archive Web pages optimized for the iPad, which allows the format to the PLEASURE of reading a long format content for offline viewing.

NETFLIX (free, but $ 8 MONTHLY FEE): it is bedtime and my spouse is watching "House hunters," which is fine and all, but you don't hear the whistle blows. This device on your nightstand, which you have been checking e-mails with spring to life as soon as you can with streaming movies and TV shows from Netflix. Click on the play, pop, headphones — all at the same time, when you hold hands with your partner. Not alone, watching what, but you're alone together.

REUTERS NEWS PRO (for free): Reuters is to separate the lovers of the Business as buttons at the bottom of the screen to the up-to-date information on the market, stocks and currencies. And the main page of the top news and bifurcates horizontally as well as move horizontally, the video that urges the skimming of the various lots rich content. When you have an application from the drop-down, is deeper-index, which allows you to see the news by country and region
